The Voice Celebrity Edition ; Role Killed off in The Hippocratic Crush II

TVB's The Voice 4 celebrity edition continued with the second day of auditions. There were another 50 artists that participated including - Sai Sai Lap (May Chan), Cilla Lok, Lisa Chong, Kayi Cheung and Candy Chang. Sai Sai Lap performed Anita Mui's The Sunset Song (夕陽之歌), but half way through her performance, she forgot the lyrics. She laughed and expressed her singing dream is over, she'll just go back and concentrate on acting.

Candy trained bitterly for 3 months in preparation for this singing contest. She said her singing instructor was her very own father. Back then, her father participated in the same singing contest as Leslie Cheung and even won an award! Earlier she guest starred in The Hippocratic Crush II mainly to explain the end of her relationship with Him Law's character. Last year Candy got into trouble with the law because she was in her male friend's car when the police caught the driver for drug possession. During the time her work was put on hiatus, her role in 'On Call 2' was killed off.

Thoughts: It upsets me that they killed her role off.....she was suppose to be the 3rd lead!  :(  Anyways, hopes the singing will work for her! A singing career would be nice :)

Thoughts on recent news...

In case you haven't heard the news, it's been said that Candy Chang was involved in a drug concealment case...don't feel like posting it on my blog, but if really want to know more, you can read it here:
http://asianuniverse.net/forums/Candy_Chang_Involved_in_Drug_Concealment_Case_Acting_Career_t350060.html

All I can say is....I REALLY hope that they will found out that Candy is innocent, and that all that isn't true. And that they're gonna keep her in The Hippocratic Crush 2. (They should cause she's already in the trailer!!) and yeahh thats about it. Hope they find out the truth soon!!!

Christine Kuo, Oceane Zhu, and Candy Chang - Who Will Become the Next TVB Fadan?

The Miss Hong Kong Pageant has traditionally cultivated many film and television actresses. However, in recent years, TVB appeared to favor winners from the Miss Chinese International Pageant rather than the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, promoting Chinese women raised overseas instead of local beauty winners. As numerous fadans have left TVB in recent years, newcomers such as Christine Kuo (苟芸慧), Oceane Zhu (朱璇), and Candy Chang (張慧雯) were now offered with incredible opportunities to distinguish themselves and rise to become the next leading lady!

In the film industry, the Miss Hong Kong Pageant created many household names such as Maggie Cheung (張曼玉), Michelle Reis (李嘉欣) and Anita Yuen (袁詠儀), who developed admirable careers. In the television circle, the pageant also produced famous actresses, such as Ada Choi (蔡少芬), Charmaine Sheh (佘詩曼) and Myolie Wu (胡杏兒), whose popularity extended across the world.

In recent years, it appears that the Miss Hong Kong pageant contestants have failed to carve out successful acting careers. Although former winners such as Kayi Cheung (張嘉兒), Toby Chan (陳庭欣) and Sandy Lau (劉倩婷) are TVB managed artists, they have failed to leave any lasting impression upon the viewers.

“Miss Chinese International” Winners Rise in Prominence

In recent years, the Miss Hong Kong Pageant has created a limited number of leading actresses. Only Kate Tsui (徐子珊) and Aimee Chan (陳茵媺) have risen to fadan status. In comparison, contestants from Miss Chinese International have been more heavily promoted. Former TVB actresses, Bernice Liu (廖碧兒) and Michelle Ye (葉璇) were among the first leading ladies sourced from the Miss Chinese International Pageant.

Subsequently, Linda Chung (鍾嘉欣) and Fala Chen (陳法拉) were also heavily promoted by TVB. Linda also managed to breakthrough her acting in Yes Sir, Sorry Sir <點解阿Sir係阿Sir>and Witness Insecurity <護花危情>. Fala was nominated for Best Actress at the 2011 TVB Anniversary Awards. Recently, she was even given a chance to release her first music album.

Who Will Become the Next TVB Fadan?

As compared with the Miss Hong Kong Pageant, the new breed of actresses emerging from the Miss Chinese International Pageant has forged more desirable careers. Amongst them are Christine Kuo (苟芸慧), Oceane Zhu (朱璇), and Candy Chang (張慧雯) who are currently given many opportunities to shine at TVB.

Winner of the 2009 Miss Chinese International Pageant, Christine was cast in many top rated TVB dramas, such as The Mysteries of Love <談情說案>, and Forensic Heroes 3 <法證先鋒III>. Recently, she is being featured more prominently in Tiger Cubs <飛虎> and Ghetto Justice 2 <怒火街頭2>, in which she plays the ex-wife of TV King, Kevin Cheng (鄭嘉穎). Possessing a beautiful face and a stunning 34C figure, Christine is considered as a “sexy goddess” among many male viewers! However, viewers have also commented that she needs to improve upon her acting skills.

After being crowned as the winner of the 2008 Miss Chinese International Pageant, Oceane Zhu was invited to lead in movie, Prince of Tears <淚王子>. In 2010, Oceane was nominated for the Hong Kong Film Awards’ Best New Performer category, as well as the Asian Film Awards. Possessing a bubbly and straightforward personality, Oceane is also being cast in high-profile dramas, Sergeant Tabloid <女警愛作戰>, Love Exceeds the Coastline <情越海岸線> and Season of Love <恋爱季节>. Viewers have commented that Oceane needs to improve upon her Cantonese and drop her Mandarin accent if she wished to strengthen her presence in TVB dramas.

Candy Chang was the second runner-up of the 2010 Miss Chinese International Pageant. As a newcomer, Candy was already featured in popular TVB drama, The Hippocratic Crush <On Call 36小時>, and acting alongside with Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Tavia Yeung (杨怡). Only 22-year-old, Candy has won praise for her natural acting in The Hippocratic Crush. She will also be appearing in coming TVB dramas, Highs and Lows <雷霆掃毒> and A Chip Off the Old Block 2 <巴不得媽媽…> .

Fresh newcomers ‘Yat Hong’ and ‘Jing Jing’ could move up any minute

Original post date: March 16 2012

So far, audiences’ response to TVB series “The Hippocratic Crush” has been pretty good. In a recent storyline development, the character of Yat Hong (Nathan Ngai) was gravely injured trying to save someone, just moments after starting a relationship with the girl he likes, Jing Jing (Candy Chang), then at the hospital, his older brother Yat Kin (Kenneth Ma) tries to save him, but without success. Upon learning of her son’s death, the mother (Gigi Wong) asks her son Yat Kin through tears why he was not able to save his little brother. In utilizing such tearjerking story elements as the scene described above, it’s obvious that the producer understands how to utilize the ‘heartfelt’ elements usually found in a family soap opera to elicit empathetic tears from the audiences.

“The Hippocratic Crush” can technically be considered the ‘graduation exam’ for Kenneth Ma (馬國明) and Tavia Yeung (楊怡) to successfully move up the ‘lead actor/actress’ ladder, however it can also be said that the series is a reflection of TVB’s current situation in the face of the upcoming ‘battle’ of the TV stations. Traditionally, in a TVB series, not only are the lead artists usually ‘household’ names, even the second and third line supporting artists are generally ‘familiar faces’ – for years, TVB artists have given this feeling of ‘familiarity’ to HK audiences. However with “The Hippocratic Crush”, TVB appears to have parted from tradition – other than the first and second lead roles being specially tailored to the artists who portray them, much of the remaining cast consists of ‘unfamiliar’ faces. For example, how many audiences know the name of the actor who plays Kenneth Ma’s brother ‘Yat Hong’? How about the actress who plays Yat Hong’s girlfriend ‘Jing Jing’? After closely scrutinizing the names listed in the credits, we see that ‘Yat Hong’ is played by Nathan Ngai (魏焌皓) and ‘Jing Jing’ is played by Candy Chang (張慧雯). Despite the lack of ‘familiarity’, the impressive performances of these 2 newcomers successfully left a deep impression on audiences, making it highly likely that they could ‘move up’ at any minute.

Promoting newcomers is definitely necessary, as there would not be the ‘old’ without the ‘new’ – besides, even the best of actors as well as superstars require a constant cultivation of talent. But with “The Hippocratic Crush”, it becomes obvious that the sudden ‘onslaught’ of newcomers is the direct result of TVB’s recent deficit in ‘familiar’ artists rather than a purposeful ‘promotion’ of newcomers – after all, the series is definitely not an ‘idol drama’ (where the focus is normally on a group of young newcomers) and the characters were not specially created and tailored with the intention of promoting the newcomers in the series.

In addition to behind-the-scenes talents [scriptwriters / directors / producers] being ‘poached’, many of TVB’s first-line siu sangs and fa dans have also left in favor of making ‘real’ money through outside opportunities – even many of the second / third line and supporting artists have decided to leave the nest! As more and more series with ‘unfamiliar’ faces and artists that most audiences can’t name continue to air, TVB will slowly lose the ‘familiarity’ element that has been its most favorable asset over the years. On the contrary, if more and more ‘familiar’ faces start appearing on the other free-to-air television stations instead, audiences who are already used to these ‘familiar’ faces may tune in and mistakenly think that they are actually watching TVB. Could this mean that TVB’s ‘customary ratings’ phenomenon may finally be challenged?

Manga Festival Press Conference

Yesterday, Candy Chang and Nathan Ngai attended the Anime Festival Press Conference for Cosplay. Candy wore a white wig and long ears. She laughed and said: " In this costume, I have to show my waist, but I still ate a sandwich. These days I've been sick with fever, I asked the doctor for heavy doses of medicine to recover quickly to attend the Anime Festival" Candy will as well attend the Anime Festival in this costume. She said: " I'm not afraid of enthusiastic fans, I love excitement."

Original post date: March 14 2012

Newcomers Candy Chang and Nathan Ngai, who play a couple in "Hippocratic", are well-received by the audience...both standing out. When the two accepted an interview, they were asked whether there was a chance for them to become a couple in reality. Candy said, "Consider it!"
